Self-Paced Elementary Russian: Syllabus

Russian 1131 and 1132 are TBA (Time to Be Arranged) courses. The class days/times are chosen at the organizational meeting. We always try to accommodate everyone. The number of sections we can teach in a given semester depends on our teaching resources and the level of interest among the students. The time and place of the organizational meeting are announced on our Welcome page, see the navigation bar on the left.

At the beginning of the semester, we find out from each group of students how hard they want to work. The workload you select is measured in credit hours: 2 or 3 credits depending on your chosen section. Choose the 2-credit section if you really don't have much time for Russian homework 3 times a week. Both sections meet 3 times a week, and by the end of the semester, cover the same amount of material, but the third day each week is always a review day, and in the 2-credit section, it is optional. In the 3-credit section attending review days is required. (Take RUSSA 1121/1122--not TBA--if you want to study more intensively, 4 or 5 times a week.)

There is one more way in which 1131-1132 are "self-paced": the pace can be, and often is, adjusted in mid-stream. If the group (and/or the teacher) feels that progress is too slow or the course moves too fast, the syllabus is adjusted accordingly. Always refresh this webpage when checking for homework.

If you use Russian 1131 and 1132 to fulfill your foreign language requirement, you need to accumulate at least 11 credit hours in all RUSSA courses combined. This can be achieved in two or three semesters by taking Russian 1103/1104 (2 credits each) at the same time as 1131/1132 or taking 1125/2203 after 1132. See "Language requirement" under Courses in the navigation bar on the left. To fulfill your Russian minor requirements, you need to complete RUSSA 2204, no matter what route you take to get to it.

The first two weeks of classes are different from the later routine, because it is difficult to separate reading, grammar, and conversation while you are still learning the alphabet and the sound system. There are additional notes in the syllabus after the second week.

      Day 69

        The rest of this course is a little different

        • All written homework is letter-graded.
        • As an option, you may write English summaries of the events in the films instead of writing translations. However, if you think translating a portion of the transcript is more useful for your learning, you may continue doing so. After about 8 weeks, you can stop writing anything for the film assignments; instead, memorize a short scene from one of the clips.
        • For each film class, prepare three simple questions on the assigned episodes. You will ask these questions in class for your classmates to answer, and we'll build discussions around those exchanges.
