Russian Screen & Printer Fonts

Most of the Web pages on this site use custom Cyrillic fonts with accented vowels (for marking primary and secondary word stress) that are not included in the standard fonts. If your browser does not display them correctly on some or all of our pages, you should download and install our fonts.

Microsoft Windows 7, Windows Vista, XP, 2000

Font Timesse Russ is offered free of charge for your personal use only. The font is copyrighted © by Fingertip Software, Inc. and may not be re-distributed without a written permission from the copyright holder.

Download and install this font and configure your browser to use it for the Cyrillic, Western, and User Defined encodings.

These directions were written for a few browsers, but they apply to other browsers as well, although the terminology may vary.

find the archive on your computer and double-click it, then follow the onscreen prompts to uncompress the archive; select a convenient location for the uncompressed font files, e.g. C:\. Do not use Desktop or My Documents.
install the fonts (in some versions of Windows you are allowed to install a font only if you are logged in to your computer as Administrator):
1. click the Start button, Settings, Control Panel
2. double-click Fonts
3. click the File menu, then the Install New Font command
4. navigate to the folder where you saved our fonts
5. when the font names are displayed, click Select All, then click OK
This is required by some (but not all) of our Web pages: tell your browser to use our font for the Cyrillic and User-Defined encodings (aka character sets or code pages).
Internet Explorer versions 8, 7 and 6
1. click Tools, Internet Options, Fonts
2. under "Language script:" select User Defined
3. under "Web page font:" select Timesse Russ
4. repeat 2 and 3 for the Cyrillic "Language script"
5. click OK, then Accessibility, and make sure that the box "Ignore font styles specified on webpages" is clear (not checked)
6. click OK, then OK again to return to the browser's main window
Mozilla Firefox versions 3, 2, 1.5, and 1
1. click Tools, Options, General (or Content), Fonts & Colors (or click Advanced under Fonts & Colors)
2. under "Fonts for:" select User Defined
3. under "Proportional:" select Serif
4. under "Serif:" select Timesse Russ
5. repeat 2, 3, and 4 for Cyrillic (and Western/Unicode/UTF-8, if shown)
6. make sure that "Allow pages to choose their own fonts" is checked (selected)
7. click OK, then again OK to return to the browser's main window
Netscape Navigator 7 and 8
1. click Edit, Preferences, Appearance, Fonts (or Tools, Options, General, Fonts & Colors)
2. under "Fonts for:" select User Defined
3. under "Proportional:" select Serif
4. under "Serif:" select Timesse Russ
5. repeat 2, 3, and 4 for Cyrillic and Western/Unicode (UTF-8, if shown) (selected under "Fonts for")
6. click OK to return to the browser's main window

If you use our fonts in your own documents, you can type Russian text with the Russian keyboard included with Windows, but if you want to type accented vowels, you should download and install this mnemonic (phonetic) keyboard mapper.

Apple Macintosh

Download this font as a Stuffit archive or Mac OS X disc image. Install the font using FontBook, then configure your browser to use it for the Cyrillic and User Defined encodings.

find the archive on your computer and double-click it to uncompress the font; then double-click the font file to open it in Font Book
click Install Font in the Font Book window; you should now see Timesse Russ (or Timesse Russ M) in the font list

You may use our font with any browser for Mac OS. Safari, Firefox, Mozilla, Opera, SeaMonkey, Flock, and Camino have been tested.

Firefox 3, 2, and 1.5
1. Click the Firefox menu, select Preferences, then Content, then click Advanced under Fonts & Colors.
2. Select the Cyrillic encoding under "Fonts for:"
3. Select Serif under Proportional Font, and then Timesse Russ (or Timesse Russ M) under Serif. Other font settings are not relevant.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 above for the User Defined encoding if it is available.
5. make sure that "Allow pages to choose their own fonts" is checked (selected)
Mozilla and Netscape Navigator
1. Click the Mozilla menu, select Preferences, then Appearance, then Fonts.
2. The rest of the process is the same as for Firefox, above.
  Always make sure that the browser allows Web pages to specify their own fonts.
Safari
1. Start Safari and click Preferences in the Safari menu
2. Click Appearance
3. In the Font window, select All Fonts, Timesse Russ (or Timesse Russ M), and an appropriate font size.
SeaMonkey, Camino, Opera, and Flock: the process is very similar. Always make sure that the browser allows Web pages to specify their own fonts.

If you use our fonts in your own documents, you can type Russian text with any Russian keyboard included with Mac OS X, but if you want to type accented vowels, you should use the Character Palette.
