Dastan Eleukenov: There was a huge number of camps in Kazakhstan, with political prisoners sent there during the era of the Stalinist repressions. For example, Karlag, the Karlag system, the Karaganda Camp, was approximately... the size of France, if all of its facilities are counted. There was the place known as ALZhIR, which stands for the Akmolinsk Camp for Wives of National Traitors, which was, incidentally, the most famous one.
