Use к + [compass point] от + [place] to locate 2 places by compass.
The rule of thumb ("use к and от with people, not places") doesn't work here. Recall that к invariably takes the Dative and от invariably takes the Genitive.
Кќев нахћдится к єгу от МосквІ. Kiev is located to the south of Moscow.
Москвђ нахћдится к сљверу от Кќева. Moscow is located to the north of Kiev.
