When you learn a verb you have to learn where the stress falls. There are three possible patterns for the non-past and three for the past.
In the dictionary 5000 Russian Words and in The Russian Dictionary Tree, the stress pattern is indicated by two capital letters right after the headword. The first letter indicates the pattern in the non-past and the second indicates the pattern in the past. The meaning of the letters is as follows:
  • S means that stress falls on the stem
  • E means that the stress falls on the endings
  • M means that:
    • for non-past forms the stress moves to the 1st Singular ending
    • for past forms M means that the stress moves to the feminine ending
