Gennadiy N. Lepeshkin: And you know, there was a referendum about whether or not to preserve the Soviet Union. Seventy per cent of the Soviet public said "Preserve the Soviet Union." And then three people sat down together and broke apart the Soviet Union, end of story. They broke it apart, they said, "No more Soviet Union." That ran counter to the will of the people, against everyone. I consider that it was an utter breakdown.
