This semester, this course is about translating American movie culture to Russian. You will watch films by three important American directors, discuss them in Russian, and write an essay on each film, in Russian. Both the discussions and the essays will, we hope, evolve into a continuous conversation about the two cultures as presented in the films and our analysis. The films will have a common theme, and we'll work on more than one film from each director. Your essays will be collected into an online almanach.
Week 1: Sunday 01/21/18 - Saturday 01/27/18 [show/hide]
Week 2: Sunday 01/28/18 - Saturday 02/03/18 [show/hide]
Monday
Watch the film and be ready for discussion:
Alfred Hitchcock. Rope. 1948. 80 minutes. Wikipedia article. По-русски: здесь. IMDb page (cast and other info, links to FAQ and user reviews).

Week 3: Sunday 02/04/18 - Saturday 02/10/18 [show/hide]
Monday
Write an essay on last week's film. In Russian, about 300 words. Consider it a draft that we will discuss in class. You will submit a finished version later: we'll try to create an online "magazine" with one issue per film. Your essay will become one of the items in this issue. Much has been written about Hitchkok's films and about his Rope in English, and you will easily find several articles in Russian about this film, e.g. https://regnum.ru/news/cultura/2261009.html, http://megabook.ru/article/Веревка, and https://kinoshkola.org/node/236. They may suggest ideas for your article, serve as examples of a characteristically Russian approach, and at the very least provide terminology for your text. Feel free also to peruse relevant articles in English. Несколько интересных фото и фактов вы найдете на сайте Народ.
