NB In the above expression and in the other expressions for "biting" shown below, the word зубы in the Instrumental case is more likely to be used with a modifier:
Он мигом разжевал жёсткое мясо своими молодыми, крепкими зубами и попросил чего-нибудь ещё. He quickly ground up the tough meat with his young strong teeth and then asked for more food.

ковырять [no Pf.] в зубахp to pick one's teeth
После обеда он начал ковырять в зубах. After dinner he began to pick his teeth.
NB The phrase ковырять в зубах usually expresses a disapproval of the action. The expression чистить зубы, below, is neutral:
чистить/вычистить зубыa (Ni) to clean one's teeth (with N)
После обеда он начал чистить зубы спичкой. After dinner he began to clean his teeth with a match.
NB The phrase чистить зубы without a reference to an implement means "to brush one's teeth"; a toothbrush is assumed. The noun in the Instrumental case suggested above is usually some other implement, such as a toothpick, a matchstick, etc.
зубочистка toothpick
