Semantics

This entry is primarily concerned with the use of the word рот denoting the human mouth as part of the face and the oral cavity. Different Russian words are used to refer to the mouth of an animal, especially a carnivore (пасть "mouth") or a bird (клюв "mouth; beak"). However, many expressions for the human mouth can also be used when speaking of animals, especially of pets and domestic animals. Common sense will dictate which of the expressions listed in this entry can or cannot be used to refer to animals. The meaning "eater" (А ведь я должен прокормить пять ртов! "After all, I have five mouths to feed!") is not described in this dictionary.
