Semantics

This entry is concerned with the use of the word лоб to refer to human and animal foreheads; special notes are provided when animal foreheads require specific expressions. Some of the expressions normally used to refer to human foreheads may be also used to refer to foreheads of animals, especially domestic animals and pets. Common sense will dictate which of the expressions can or cannot be used to refer to animals or humans.

NB Irregular in phrases по лбу [по лбу is also possible] "on the forehead"; что в лоб, что по лбу "all the same, it makes no difference."

Before лб- the longer variants of prepositions с(о), в(о), к(о), and, optionally, of из(о), от(о), над(о), под(о) are used.

NB The size and shape of a forehead are considered to reflect a person's intellectual properties. Therefore the corresponding expressions have connotations of intelligence or, on the contrary, stupidity, narrow-mindedness; the expressions большой, огромный, сократовский or высокий лоб, above, are associated with intelligence, while the expressions маленький, узкий or покатый лоб, below, are associated with stupidity.
