Колени Пети были в ссадинах. Petya's knees were scratched up.
Колени его дрожали. His knees shook.
NB When the word колено functions as a subject and does not have a descriptive modifier, the construction колено у + Genitive is often preferred to (a) and (b), above:
Колени у него дрожали. His knees shook.

Restrictive modifiers

(a) adjectival modifier
(b) noun phrase: Adj + Genitive of нога
(c) prepositional phrase: на + Adj + Prepositional of нога
левое/правое колено the left/right knee
Левое колено у него было в ссадинах. His left knee was scratched up.
то колено, которое было мне видно the knee I could see
колено левой ноги the knee on the left leg
колено на левой ноге the knee on the left leg
