Semantics

Russian differs from English in that the word рукђ may denote either "hand" (i.e. that part of the body from the wrist to the tips of the fingers) or "arm" (i.e. that part of the body from the shoulder to the tips of the fingers). This entry is concerned with both of these usages. The word рукђ is not normally used to refer to animals' arms or hands.

The word рукђ also has a number of other metonymic and metaphorical meanings: a style of drawing, painting, or writing, e.g.:

Посмотрљв на письмћ, ћн узнђл рџку брђта. He looked at the letter and recognized his brother's hand.

a creative style, e.g.:

Здљсь виднђ рукђ большћго мђстера. The hand of a great master is in evidence here.

a characteristic method, e.g.:

NB Рукђ "hand" vs. кќсть "hand." The word кќсть is somewhat technical (i.e., anatomical) in style and less common than the word рукђ. Кќсть suggests the bones rather than the flesh, and is used only with modifiers that describe visible properties. Thus, such adjectives as влђжная "damp," горїчая "hot," лћвкая "nimble," can only be used with рукђ, but not with кќсть. Certain verb phrases which may include рукђ are not allowed with кќсть: потирђть рџки "to rub one's hands," взїть в рџку "to take in one's hand," держђть в рукљ "to hold in one's hand," etc. Compare взїть зђ руку "to take someone by the hand," which is a very common expression, and взїть за кќсть, which is almost a technical description of the same movement, appropriate for a doctor looking for pulse, or a coach showing a specific movement, etc.
