Semantics

This entry is primarily concerned with the use of the word рћт denoting the human mouth as part of the face and the oral cavity. Different Russian words are used to refer to the mouth of an animal, especially a carnivore (пђсть "mouth") or a bird (клєв "mouth; beak"). However, many expressions for the human mouth can also be used when speaking of animals, especially of pets and domestic animals. Common sense will dictate which of the expressions listed in this entry can or cannot be used to refer to animals. The meaning "eater" (А ведь ї дћлжен прокормќть пїть ртћв! "After all, I have five mouths to feed!") is not described in this dictionary.
