Andrew Weber: We had learned through some defectors from the Russian... the Soviet bio-weapons program that in the late 1980s, over a hundred tons of anthrax agent were buried on the island, and we were able to determine the location and so we actually suited up with respirators and Tyvec just to make sure we weren't exposing ourselves to anything, and dug down and took some core samples, and actually recovered live weaponized anthrax spores, which we later completely destroyed in a joint project with the government of Uzbekistan in a 2001, 2002 time frame.
